The Open Journal went to the streets of downtown Johannesburg and discovered some healthy vegetables just literally under R10, whereas some assume eating healthy is expensive. Eating healthy food is essential for the wellbeing of everyone, especially students who in most cases have financial challenges.

“The benefits of people for coming to buy from us is that we don’t sell to make a profit, but it is like [an] exchange,” said Kingsely Onyenze, a street vendor at Kerk street in the Johannesburg CBD.
- Red cabbage
Red cabbage is good for dietary fiber, which is responsible for weight loss and easy flow of bowel. This leaves one feeling refreshed. At supermarkets, it is priced at R10; street vendors sell it for as little as R7.
Garlic has many benefits – especially in lowering cholesterol and in turn lowering the chances of sicknesses such as flu. At stores like Woolworths, garlic is R12,99 per kg, whereas street vendors sell each at just R5.
- Sweet Potatoes
Sweet Potatoes can help one to avoid overeating during the day. They are a good source of Vitamin A, high in fiber and support a good immune system. In some supermarkets, it is found at R22,99 per kg – yet street vendors sell them as little as R10.
Peppers increase night vision and they have vitamin C, which helps with weight loss. Peppers cost R32.99 per kg at Woolworths, while downtown at JHB street vendors sell it at R10.
- Broccoli and Cauliflower
Broccoli and Cauliflower have benefits of clear skin and building tissue bone. Spar sells each broccoli and cauliflowers at R22,99 per 300gram. At the streets, vendors sell them at the cost of R10.
These prices have persuaded customers to appreciate the way street vendors understand their pockets. “I like the freshness of the fruits and vegetables, and they are very cheap,” said Maletsatsi Sekgalo, a buyer found at Kerk street market.
