On Thursday evening, University of Johannesburg (UJ) earned the respect of their visitors from the University of Fort Hare visitors (UFH) in a home match.
UJ beat UFH with three goals to nil putting them in the third spot on the Varsity Football Cup table.
It was a one-sided game as UJ proved to be executing a skillful attack on their opponents throughout the game. UJ’s Shaune Mogaila had a good start to the game, attacking restlessly in the first half but failed to make the opening score.
Frustrated UJ fans were desperate for an opening goal as they kept chanting songs of support to inspire their players. But the two sides went to the half time break with a goalless level score.
In the second half, UJ were hungry for victory as they came out onto the field and got a corner-kick. Ziyaad Hendricks’s header helped UJ to lead the game by a goal.
The home team showed no signs of slowing down as Hendricks managed to score his second goal of the match. This was followed by Pogiso Mabote’s goal that led to the home side’s 3-0 victory.
Both of the sponsors’ prizes were taken by UJ players. Ziyaad Hendricks was named FNB Player of the Match and Shaune Mogaila received the Samsung Shot goal Award.
Next week Thursday, UJ will take on North West University in a home game at 18:30 in what will be round six of the varsity cup.
